A Germ Factory and a Good Mother: CeeCee Starts Preschool

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage S3E3, “A Germ Factory and a Good Mother,” spends a full episode on a first day of preschool where the three-year-old is fine and every adult around her is not. It’s a lighter outing after the Mary and Fagenbacher drama of S3E2, and the idea at the center of it is a good one.
A Germ Factory and a Good Mother: The Flip
On a first day of school, it’s usually the kid who screams for the parent. Here the roles swap. Mandy does the big speech about how it’s normal to be scared or a little sad, then asks for one more hug. CeeCee’s answer is “Let go.” When the teacher, Ms. Diane, asks if she’s ready for her first day, CeeCee says “Nope,” and by story time she has fallen asleep.
It’s a nice inversion, and the setup pays it off early. Audrey, who babysits CeeCee, objects to the whole idea (“I watch her”) and warns that Georgie and Mandy are sending her into a germ factory. The preschool tour has its moments too: CeeCee can count to ten, “not in order, but it’s really cute, so we don’t correct her,” and she knows every word to “Welcome to the Jungle.”
Georgie Can’t Leave Her
Georgie takes CeeCee to school and then doesn’t leave her there, which he hides until Mandy figures it out. The awkward part is that Mandy has just told her own mother she’s being selfish for wanting to keep CeeCee at home. A second attempt at drop-off ends with both parents deciding they made a mistake and bringing her back out.
Georgie takes CeeCee to the tire shop for a Bring Your Daughter to Work Day, and a fall while climbing over tires leaves her with four stitches in her chin. His update to Mandy is a classic: they’re at the toy store because “I’m trying to buy her love back.”
Jim, Audrey and the Puppy
Audrey spends the episode low about CeeCee going to school, so Jim brings her a surprise puppy because she said she missed having something cute to take care of. Her reaction is the best beat of the subplot: “You think you can replace my granddaughter with a dog?” Jim’s counter is that a dog will never grow up and leave her, and then, “She will die, though.”
The puppy goes back, and Jim is the one who ends up heartbroken. Later Audrey tells Mandy that her objections were about her and not CeeCee, and Mandy’s “I don’t feel like a good mother” gets the answer that it’s what the wine is for.

A Breather Between Plots
After Mary’s kiss with Fagenbacher, this episode steps away from that thread entirely, and Connor’s storyline sits this one out as well. It’s understandable. A long arc needs room to breathe, and a family comedy can afford a quieter week.
The episode does lean on one idea: each adult gets their own version of not being able to let go of CeeCee. The one-liners carry it (“the childcare is free, but the emotional damage is forever”), and the lice call at the very end is a decent button. It’s also hard to build a story around a toddler who can’t be directed, so the grown-ups carry most of the weight.
It isn’t the show at its sharpest, but the flip is a good idea and the series has plenty of runway left. Next week, with the Fagenbacher plot back in play, will say more about where S3 is heading.
