Season 3, Episode 2

Mary and Fagenbacher spent most of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage S3E2 being worse for Georgie’s case than anything Georgie said about them. The man he wants exposed for crimes walked out of a ruined date, asked Georgie to get his mother home safely, and showed up the next morning with a breakfast burrito.

A weather pig, a pitch and a medium-hard answer

The episode opens with a pig who forecasts by snorting: once for rain, twice for dry. Mandy jokes that it shouldn’t be coming for her job. The farmer waves it off, because Petunia is going to slaughter this week.

The real business is Mandy asking her boss, Lindsey, whether she can do hard-hitting material. Lindsey sizes up her outfit and says it doesn’t exactly strike her as hard-hitting. Mandy insists, gets asked who the mayor of Medford is, and retreats to medium hard-hitting. Lindsey still invites her to dinner, and Georgie is on the list.

The dinner Georgie was told not to ruin

Georgie’s orders are clear: say nothing about the age gap. It goes fine until Lindsey asks about the tire store and he starts talking tires and doesn’t stop. Then she asks where they met. At a laundromat in Medford. Lindsey remembers it, the one with the gambling room in the back, and says she used to be a regular. The old woman who ran it was lovely. That’s his Meemaw.

Mandy tried to sell herself as serious, and the connection came from the part of the story she’d probably rather skip.

Then several guests leave and Georgie sees his mother on a date with Fagenbacher.

Mary and Fagenbacher at the next table

The confrontation picks up directly from Georgie’s standoff with Mary in the premiere, where the whole family sided against him. Mandy stops Georgie from marching over once. The second time she concludes there’s no point. He and Mary have it out at the dinner table, Georgie demands they leave, Mary refuses, and he goes back to his seat. He tries to move, but there’s no seat that gets him out of Mary’s line of sight.

Mary, rattled by the argument, pours a few more glasses of wine than she should.

Lindsey notices all of it. She asks how long ago Georgie’s father died. Several years. Then surely his mother can go out with someone? Georgie’s answer is to point his anger at Fagenbacher and mutter that she should write something exposing his business. An exposé? No, exposing his business for crimes.

Mary spends the date talking about her fight with Georgie. Fagenbacher asks her where he’s from, and she doesn’t know. He gets up and leaves. On the way out he stops at Georgie’s table and asks him to bring her home safely.

The episode sets two small questions side by side. When Lindsey asked who the mayor of Medford was, Mandy backed down from hard-hitting to medium hard-hitting. When Fagenbacher asked Mary where he’s from, she had no answer, and he left. One cost Mandy a promotion pitch. The other cost Mary her date.

The burrito

The next morning Mary wakes up badly hungover. Fagenbacher is at her door with coffee, aspirin and the greasiest breakfast burrito in Medford. She apologizes and says they can stay friends if he wants. He says he’d like that. She kisses him full on the mouth and closes the door. The last shot is him standing there, mouth still open.

He had a clean exit at the restaurant and didn’t need the second act. Nobody was watching when he came back, and there’s no angle visible in how the scene is shot.

Is Fagenbacher actually shady?

Going by the episode descriptions from earlier seasons, he’s Jim’s longtime nemesis who tried to run Georgie and Ruben out of business and tried to sabotage Georgie’s attempt to honor his dad. That’s hardball rivalry. Nothing I found shows him doing something criminal, and so far the only source for the crime angle is Georgie. What this episode establishes is narrower: he’s decent when it comes to Mary.

Mary also has money in this fight, since she put up the house for the extra mortgage on Georgie’s business. She’s dating a competitor of the thing her house is backing.

Connor, Jim and the synthesizer

Audrey, worried about Connor’s new criminal record, hands him brochures on the dangers of drugs. Jim’s take is that he’d rather Connor make a mistake outside the house than never leave it. Connor then sells his synthesizer to pay Georgie back. Audrey sees him selling his life. Jim says owning up means taking responsibility and paying Georgie back yourself.

The buyer answered an ad, and Georgie doesn’t know yet. That’s a thread for later in the season.

Connor sits on his bed holding a guitar while Jim stands over him in a cluttered attic studio full of synthesizer gear.

Where this might go

This part is my read, not something the show has set up. Jim taught Georgie what it feels like to be good at something and be trusted with it. But Jim runs one garage, and the Georgie who ends up as Doctor Tire owns several. The man who might teach him the business side and expansion is the aggressive one. Fagenbacher is the obvious candidate, and with Mary in the picture it could happen over dinner and not through a job offer.

That’s a long way from Georgie’s current position. This week he sat across a restaurant glaring at the man who was kinder to his mother than he was.

What this means for Georgie

The episode makes Mary and Fagenbacher look better the harder Georgie pushes against them. Whether that holds depends on whether anyone besides Georgie ever says something bad about the man.
